what is iit jam – Indian Institute of Technology Joint Admission Test for MSc (IIT-JAM)
JAM or Joint Admission Test for MSc is an All-India Level Entrance Examination conducted by one of the participating IITs every year on a rotational basis.
This is an examination conducted online mode on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resource Department, Government of India.
Students who are interested in pursuing a Master’s degree Programme from renowned Indian educational institutes like IITs, NITs, and IISc can appear for this examination.
IIT JAM scores are inevitable for students to secure admission for MSc and other postgraduate courses offered at IITs and integrated Ph.D. courses offered by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.
Most of the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) also accept JAM scores for MSc admissions.
Out of 23 IITs, 20 IITs and an IISc participate in conducting IIT JAM.
They offer admission to various Postgraduate courses such as MSc, Integrated Ph.D., Integrated MSc Ph.D., MSc Ph.D., and Dual Degree in various subjects based on the IIT JAM 2020 Scores.
Apart from these IITs, 19 National Institute of Technology (NITs), and two Centrally Funded Technical Institute (CFTIs) also accept the JAM Scores.
In the year 2019, IIT JAM was conducted for six science subjects – Biotechnology (BT), Chemistry (CY), Geology (GG), Mathematics (MA), Mathematical Statistics (MS), and Physics (PH).

There will be an addition of one more subject to the priorly accepted six science subjects in IIT JAM 2021. That is Economics (EN)
A Biometric system utilizing fingerprint technology will be used for identification purposes in JAM exam 2021 as well as for admission purposes.

Details regarding the number of attempts allowed to apply for IIT-JAM
There are no restrictions on the number of attempts for the IIT JAM examination.
Students can apply as many times as they want or whenever they want.
Students will have to satisfy the eligibility criteria prescribed by the exam conducting institute whenever they are applying for the IIT JAM examination.
Difficulty Level of IIT-JAM Examination
IIT-JAM is not very difficult while comparing with the difficulty level of the IIT-JEE Advanced examination.
The difficulty level of question paper can range from moderate to difficult level.
IIT-JAM Eligibility Criteria
- Students must satisfy the eligibility criteria as prescribed in official notification to appear for IIT JAM Examination.
- Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree with at least 55% aggregate to appear for the IIT JAM examination.
- Students who belong to SC, ST, and PwD category must score a minimum 50% aggregate to appear for this examination
- The total percentage of marks should be considered without rounding off and considering all subjects, including languages and subsidiaries, all years combined.
- Students who have a graduation degree or will appear for their graduation exams in 2021 are also eligible to apply for this examination.
